The English and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a group once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing win, with Scotland unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools play out according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match aimed at launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
